This mini camp is designed for youngsters as their first overnight camp experience away from parents.  We will have a wonderful variety of activities to make this camp well rounded for the first-time camper, including group games, exploratory learning sessions on outdoor subjects, art work, free time, stories, and a chance for kids to help with meals.  The short duration and busy schedule make it an ideal first camp for young children.

Bear Paw Young Naturalist Camp

June 22-27 and August 10-15, 2008, Sunday-Friday

Explore the wild lands of Glacier National Park, Flathead National Forest and the North Fork Valley.  Learn about the diversity of plants and animals and the basic concepts of ecology as you develop the skills of a naturalist during this action packed week of field trips, hikes, lab projects, games, and presentations.  The week will culminate in student designed presentations on highlights of the week for parents and friends.  Each camp emphasizes different wildlife topics and experiences, so participants can enroll in one or both camps.

Mountain Goat Hiking Camp

Do you love to hike?  Have you always wanted to learn more about hiking and the environments that can be explored along the way?  This camp will be packed with sessions on outdoor skills such as orienteering, using maps and compasses, backcountry safety, and “Leave No Trace” skills. These sessions will give you the skills you need to explore the outdoors safely while learning about the ecology of the different environments in and around Glacier National Park and Flathead National Forest.  A whitewater raft trip is included to learn about other exciting means of travel and adventure.

Dragonfly Art & Nature Camp

Experience the wonder of the natural world in this camp focused on art and nature. We will experience the beauty of the forest, mountains and rivers through activities like hiking, field sketching, collage, nature art, journaling, and campfire poetry. One day will be devoted to learning the artwork, culture, and history of the Northern Plains Indians through the Hockaday Museum of Art’s Traveling Medicine Show. This is a perfect camp for creative students who wish to take art outside! Some art materials will be required.

Woolly Bugger Fly-fishing Camp

What better way to learn about aquatic sciences than with a classic outdoor activity, fly-fishing!  We will combine various aspects of fly-fishing with aquatic ecology to give new and experienced anglers a better understanding of how to fly-fish and why understanding aquatic ecology helps you fish better.  We will enjoy sessions on casting, fly-tying, angler ethics, insects and fish biology.  Also, we will be visiting with local fishing experts and biologists to increase our knowledge and skills.  A fishing float trip on the river is included.

Soaring Eagle Backcountry Wilderness Camp

Experience the beauty, adventure and satisfaction of achievement while exploring the ruggedness of Glacier National Park. This seven day backpacking camp begins at Big Creek where hikers receive training in backcountry travel preparation, backcountry ethics and safety skills. After preparation we will head into the wilderness for four nights, gaining confidence in map and compass skills, proper backpacking gear use, cooking and trip planning. The hiking level for this camp is strenuous and backpack, sleeping bag and pad are required. Trip itinerary subject to change.

River Otter Family Camp

Enjoy a weekend with your family and spend time exploring Big Creek! This camp features hiking, wilderness skills, outdoor activities, and fun evening programs. Together families will have the opportunity to learn about the natural diversity of the area, look for wildlife and make exciting discoveries along the trail. The camp is a great introduction for families to connect with the outdoors in a safe, fun and educational environment.  Come to the North Fork Valley and experience summer camp as an entire family!
